KITTERY BUSINESS PARK

What is a Charrette?

The Workforce Housing Coalition’s signature design charrettes are dedicated to transforming the way people work together by broadening the host community’s capacity for collaboration. Each charrette is a hypothetical thought exercise that harnesses the talents and energies of volunteer architects, engineers, and other housing industry professionals. The charrette process relies on the realistic challenges presented by a real site, but encourages the community and the volunteers to ask, “what if?” We ask community members to describe their ideal community, and our volunteers bring these ideas to life.

Previous Kittery Charrettes:

The Workforce Housing Coalition has worked with the Town of Kittery to host two previous charrettes. The first, in 2011, focused on a property that once housed the Kittery Water District. The second, in 2018, focused on a property at 25 Walker Street. We are excited to return and work with the community in Kittery once again.

BACKGROUND

Kittery's Business Park Zone was originally created in the 1990’s to encourage office or industrial development on parcels that are served by utilities and easily accessed from major roadways. Market trends, environmental considerations, and community needs have changed since then, making this parcel a priority area for reexamination.

The Town of Kittery recently completed both a Market Study of the town as a whole, and a Hydrologic Study of this particular parcel. More information about this zone, including both studies, can be found here: Business Park Zoning | kitteryme.
